Digital red-light camera on trial

SINGAPORE- The Traffic Police has begun testing its first digital red light enforcement camera at the junction of Victoria Street and Arab Street.

Installed last month, motorists driving past the junction towards Lavender Street may have noticed a white light flashing from the new device, the police said in a Facebook post yesterday.

They added that it was just part of its tests, and law-abiding motorists need not be alarmed.

These cameras will also be installed for testing at the following junctions in the coming months:

Victoria Street by Ophir Road, towards Bras Basah Road.

Victoria Street by Rochor Road, towards Lavender Street.

Lavender Street by Jalan Besar, towards Balestier Road.

Ophir Road by Beach Road, towards the ECP.

No summonses will be issued during this testing period, said a police spokesman, adding that more updates would be provided later.

The second junction on the list was the scene of a horrific accident in May last year when three people died after a Ferrari ran a red light and hit a taxi at high speed.

In the next two years, 300 new digital red light and speed cameras will replace the 240 existing ones at traffic junctions islandwide. The digital cameras shorten the time taken to process images taken by them.

The move to install more traffic enforcement cameras was announced by the Government in March as part of its moves to improve road safety in the face of a worsening trend of motorists flouting rules.
