Dying mum hides baby in toilet bowl to shield her from violent boyfriend

She was dying, shot in the head, but a US woman still managed to place her baby in a toilet bowl, which she then covered with her own body, as her boyfriend went berserk.

Ms Jessica Arrendale, 37, had come home from a night out with her daughter Cobie's father, Mr Antoine Davis, 30, on Sept 13 when he became violent, the police said.

With her baby in her arms, Ms Arrendale tried to defend herself with a baseball bat, but she was overpowered by Mr Davis, who struck her several times with the bat, said Ms Arrendale's mother, Ms Teresa Inniello.

Mr Davis chased his girlfriend up the stairs of her three-storey Atlanta, Georgia, townhouse, reported People.

She locked herself in the bathroom with her six-month-old daughter, but Mr Davis - a former Marine who served in Iraq - retrieved an assault rifle outfitted with a suppressor, broke down the door and shot her in the head.

With her daughter still in her arms, Ms Arrendale twisted her body to place the baby in the open toilet bowl and laid her body over her daughter, Ms Inniello said.

"He shot her and (the police) don't know how she was able to twist her body and fall literally in the opposite direction," said Ms Inniello. She believes Mr Davis intended to kill his daughter as well, but was unable to see the child.

He is then believed to have walked into Cobie's room and fatally shot himself.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the police evacuated nearby homes as a precaution and attempted to make contact with the armed man inside.
