Stephen Chow's latest comedy The Mermaid has made a huge splash not just in terms of dollars and cents, but also on the imagination of fans taken with the fantasy of a fish out-of-water.
Male audiences are besotted with the curvy mermaid played by gorgeous actress Lin Yun, while a scene of a clumsy bloated mermaid struggling out of a bathtub has got audiences in stitches - typical of director Chow's kind of tomfoolery that he unabashedly acted out in his previous movies.
A probably unintended spoof of the wacky scene has created much amusement online although it has an innocent, cutesy twist.
It is a kiddie version showing poolside photos of a chubby Vietnamese toddler flopping in a mermaid costume. The parents of Le Pham Kha Di thought she would look cute in it so they dressed her up and took pictures of her by a pool at their hometown in Ho Chi Minh city,
Hong Kong actress Anita Yuen thought she was too darn cute that she had to put her photos online. They went viral and Kha Di became the new Little Mermaid sensation to the surprise of her parents.
Maybe Chow could consider giving her a role if he is doing a sequel. After all, the movie has become such a whopping hit that it is now China's highest-grossing movie, tail-slapping other competitors released at the same period - The Monkey King 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3.
