Pandas mate at San Diego Zoo

SAN DIEGO - It's panda mating season, and the San Diego Zoo has just opened the enclosures for its two pandas to have their first encounter.

Zookeepers say say they monitored the pandas' behaviour and hormone levels before allowing Bai Yun and Gao Gao to have physical contact with each other.

"We want to see between the two bears interest in each other," said animal care supervisor Lisa Martin.

"We want to see Bai Yun, the female, looking 100 per cent participatory.

"Which means that she is presenting her tail end, she's in a good position that the male bear Gao Gao can approach from."

Female pandas only have a short 48-72 hour window to conceive each year.

Results won't be known until summer, just before a possible birth.
