Rising player called 'paedophile'

A Rochdale youth player is facing police action after posting a vile comment about Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard's three-year-old daughter on Instagram.

The Liverpool midfielder, 34, had earlier posted a smiling photo of himself with his daughter Lourdes on his Instagram account with the message: "My world", reported the Irish Independent.

He has three daughters, aged three, nine and 11.

But a League One club Rochdale youth player posted a vulgar comment about the child.

The comment provoked an uproar from fans, who branded the youth a paedophile. The young player was a rising star tipped for the top, reported UK's The Daily Star Sunday.

One fan who was upset by the Instagram comment told the Daily Star Sunday that the player should know better than to make horrible remarks like this.

SICK

The supporter, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "It was right out of order. I don't know what he was thinking but sicko remarks like that - especially put under his own name - beggar belief. The girl is only three.

"This was a fellow footballer and a supposed rising star at that."

Rochdale FC said that they were "dealing internally" with the matter after a barrage of complaints.

The youth player later removed the taunt but his club are close to showing him the door.

A source at Rochdale FC said the player is in trouble as his comments have brought the club into disrepute. He said that a few angry people have called the club to complain.

"There were calls for him to be kicked out but that hasn't happened yet. He may escape with a suspension and a fine but he'll be a lucky boy if he does," said the source.

A spokeswoman for Rochdale FC told The Daily Star: "The matter has been dealt with internally. We will be making no further comment."

Gerrard had not reported the incident and his spokesman declined to comment.
