Topless women protest in Brazil

A group of topless women gathered at the Ipanema beach in Brazil on Dec 21 to protest the criminalisation of walking around topless in Rio de Janeiro's beaches.

However, despite the hype surrounding the protest, only a few women actually took off their tops. Photojournalists surrounded them on Saturday as they flouted the law.

Under Brazilian law, female toplessness is considered an obscene act which could result in imprisonment from three months to one year, or a fine.

Some men also joined in, circling their chest area with paint.

According to Reuters, local media reported that the protest was called after an actress was stopped by police officers while half naked in a photo shoot on a beach to promote her play.
