With less than 20 per cent of Japan's 374,744 sq km land area habitable, space is definitely a premium.

In a study done by The Economist group, Graham Davis, Managing Director of the Economist, said: "Buildings have little value - the land does."

In Central Tokyo for instance, land makes up for a higher proportion of the total price - roughly 70 per cent for new houses and 80 to 90 per cent for old houses.

With this in mind, it is no surprise that houses exist in tiny plots of land. Instead of going for more land, owners will make every space count, and in the case of these 10 incredibly tiny homes, build up.
