Chirashi, or raw seafood on rice, caught on in Singapore not long ago, with chefs using premium ingredients such as uni (sea urchin) and ikura (salmon roe) for the dish.
With so many places now offering the rice bowl where sushi and sashimi are joined in perfect harmony, food app Burpple has tapped on its user reviews to round up 13 of the best.
Nearly half of the recommendations are in the Orchard Road area, and they range from affordable to slightly more extravagant.
At Sumiya Charcoal Grill Izakaya in Orchard Central, for instance, a bara chirashi (diced sashimi on rice) set costs $20 - but it could be well worth your money. According to Burpple user Jennifer Yeo, the set comes with a "massive portion" of sashimi consisting mostly salmon and tuna plus an "overwhelming amount" of ikura.
If you're in the mood to splurge, the aburi chirashi at Tatsuya in Goodwood Park Hotel uses sashimi flown in from Japan's famed Tsukiji fish market. But for that, you also pay a premium as each bowl costs $150.
However, seafood from Tsukiji Market could also be had for a more pocket-friendly price. Bara chirashi at Sushi Jin in the Little India area is going for $32 a bowl. According to Burpple user Alainlicious Eats, it features a generous amount of fresh sashimi, tamago, ikura, and tobiko (flying fish roe).
"The rice brims with a pleasantly subtle umami kick, thanks to the special seasoning of shiitake mushrooms," he adds.
