1977 Malaysia Cup heroes in action

Singapore football fans are in for a special treat on Saturday, when the 1977 Malaysia Cup-winning team make a rare appearance for a good cause at the Padang.

Stars of yesteryear like striker Quah Kim Song, free-kick expert S. Rajagopal, former Lions skipper Samad Allapitchay and defender Robert Sim will lace up their boots in a friendly match against invited sponsors.

Open to the public, the game kicks off at 5.15pm and is part of a fundraising effort for the Children's Cancer Foundation.

Event organiser Quah said close to $100,000 had already been raised.

His new book - Pass Kim Song the per cent#@* ball! The Quah Kim Song Story - will also be launched at the event by President Tony Tan Keng Yam.

While the 62-year-old will no longer be able to reprise his diving header winner in a 3-2 triumph over Penang at the 1977 Cup final, he called on fans to come and mingle with the golden oldies, who will be signing limited-edition posters of the iconic team.

Fabled Malaysian footballer Soh Chin Aun is expected to make an appearance.

Quah said: "I'm pleased that my former team-mates, many of whom don't like the limelight, are coming out for a special occasion. "It will be a fun evening of reminiscing the good old days of Malaysia Cup football."

The match, consisting of two 20-minute halves and followed by a private reception, will also feature Singapore players from later years such as R. Suriamurthi and Terry Pathmanathan.
