24-hour eateries in Malaysia must spend 6 hours a week washing up
JOHOR BARU - Starting next month, 24-hour restaurants and eateries operating in the Johor Baru City Council must spend at least six hours each week to clean up their premises.
The new requirement, however, does not apply to 24-hour franchise or fast food chain restaurants as these outlets have its own set of standard operating procedure for cleanliness.
Johor Baru Mayor A. Rahim Nin said the move was necessary to ensure all such outlets were clean.
"We are serious in addressing numerous complaints from customers especially on dirty toilets and clogged grease traps.
"It is mandatory for these outlets to allocate six hours each week to clean up their premises and the council must be notified," he said after chairing the full council meeting here yesterday.
Rahim said the operators would be given an option to carry out the cleaning up exercise either from 6am to 12pm or from 12pm to 6pm.
He said officers from the council and the Johor Health Department would be present on the notified time to carry out inspections.
"We are not trying to make things difficult. So, we allow them to choose the hours and days at their convenience.
"If the premises are still found to be dirty, we will instruct them to do another round of cleaning up," he said, adding that customers should be accorded a clean and comfortable environment for them to enjoy their meals.
Rahim said under the new guideline, the department could issue notices for temporary closure of the premises for one day, three days or up to a week to carry out the task.
Out of some 2,000 restaurants operating under the council's jurisdiction, more than 100 outlets are in this category.
