30,000 take part in 7th Sundown Marathon

SINGAPORE - Approximately 30,000 runners took part in the seventh edition of the Sundown Marathon on Saturday night.

This year, changes were made to the marathon route to include the one-kilometre Benjamin Sheares Bridge and newly introduced 'Glow Zones' which featured unique lights along selected parts of race routes.

The marathon concluded at the F1 Pit Building on Sunday morning.

"The inclusion of the Sheares bridge is the most challenging part for a marathon runner," said Adrian Mok, Managing Director of HiVelocity Events, the owner and organiser of Sundown Marathon.

"We wanted to incorporate a new route into this year's race to challenge the participants, and also offer a more appealing route which helps them to take their minds off the race for a bit, and which showcases our city skyline," he said.

Mok Ying Rong, 21, won the Women's half-marathon category, crossing the finish line with a time of 1 hour 34 minutes. She said: "I was really exhausted. I just told myself to be focused throughout the whole run. I couldn't let my mind get distracted."

"The key is always optimistism and working towards the end goal," she added.

Organisers also launched a charity outreach programme called Sundown With Love. There was a special category for handcyclists from Handcycling Association of Singapore was included in the full marathon event, and an exclusive Hand Cycling Sprint event. A total of six handcyclists competed in the full marathon category while 14 junior handcylists took part in the sprint.
