Singapore is famous for many things, one of which being the incredible array of food options available. Every so often, some inventive cooks try to up the ante on their creations. Frankly, some might be flops, but you might be surprised at how many work out amazingly well. Here are nine wacky and yummy combinations you must try!

Chee cheong fun, or steamed rice rolls, might be a breakfast favourite in Singapore, but you've definitely not had chee cheong fun quite like this. Durian chee cheong fun is served chilled, and has generous servings of rich durian flesh wrapped in the silky chee cheong fun skin, topped with sugared peanuts. Warning: for durian lovers only! If you are not a fan of the King of Fruits, you can try out other interesting fruit options like mangoes, strawberries, apples or bananas.

Tangy fruit juice, sweet and spicy mee siam, and crayfish, all in one hawker dish? This is one dish you have to taste to believe! Owner Daniel Soo replaces the tamarind juice in this dish with a secret blend of fruit juice. The result? A deliciously light and citrusy bowl of mee siam, generously topped with hard boiled egg, shrimp, bean sprouts and bean curd.

3. Chendol XLB (part of $108 Signature Menu) Labyrinth

Labyrinth prides itself on serving modern experimental cuisine, and the Chendol XLB is testament to that. Unlike your traditional xiao long bao filled with meat and broth, this sweet dessert is filled with pops of red bean, grass jelly, coconut milk and gula melaka - all wrapped in bright green pandan har gow skin. Served in a traditional dim sum basket, you'll definitely want more than one of these!

4. Chilli Pineapple Ice Pop ($14) Moosehead Kitchen-Bar

This chilli pineapple ice pop with gula melaka, banana and chocolate is a definite party in your mouth. The chilli and pinepple combination is Mexican-inspired, and though the spiciness is not overly strong, it does linger on your tongue after a few bites! Moosehead Kitchen-Bar also features other weird and wonderful dishes, like the Crispy spiced pig's ears, as well as Bacon-wrapped chargrilled dates.

5. Miso Walnut ice cream ($3.20 onwards) Tom's Palette

Tom's Palette is no stranger to weird ice cream creations (remember salted egg yolk ice cream?). Miso walnut ice cream is no exception - a unique blend of the popular Japanese seasoning with sweet walnut praline. Other stand-out flavours from the Tom's Palette menu include Asian tea, or Sarsi ice cream.

6. Monster Green Lager Beer ($11 onwards) RedDot Brew House

Get your dose of greens with this stunning green spirulina infused lager beer. This sparkling green drink with low hop is clean and crisp, with hints of malt. Down this with RedDot's signature Spicy Linguini Crab Meat for a dinner that really hits the spot.

7. Golden Custard Lava Cake ($12) Five and Dime Eatery

Lovers of dark chocolate and salted egg yolk would love this dessert! The conventional chocolate lava cake is given a local twist by Chef Andy, the Head Chef at Five and Dime Eatery. Salted egg yolk is pretty much everywhere these days, but this is one dish you must try (if only to Instagram a shot of the salted egg yolk custard oozing out of the cake). Limited portions available daily.

It seems like everyone is raising their mooncake game this year, with an amazing array of flavours incorporating ingredients such as yuzu, durian, and even teh tarik. Our pick of the most unique flavour, however, goes to Wan Hao's Black Truffle with Roasted Chestnut, Waxed Duck and Single Yolk with White Lotus Seed Paste mooncake! If it sounds like a mouthful, that is because it is - imagine the mellowed down flavour of black truffle coupled with the smokey taste of roasted chestnuts, and savoury waxed duck. If anything, the beautiful charcoal colour of this mooncake is enough to entice you to pick up a box!

9. Thank You For Smoking cocktail ($21) The Powder Room

This rich concoction of barrel-aged cigar tobacco- and coffee-infused whisky, slightly sweetened with chocolate bitters, port reduction and cherry notes, is definitely a must-try. As Asia's first thematic cocktail bar, The Powder Room pays homage to the roaring 20s, with its sequins and feathers and whimsy. Spend your next playful night out in this joint!
