Over 14,000 tour buses are scheduled to undergo nationwide inspections, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) said yesterday.

MOTC Minister Mao Chi-kuo said that the Directorate General of Highways (DGH) discovered there could be a mechanical problem stemming from an Isuzu manufacturing process that may have been partially responsible for a deadly accident that took place in Hsinchu last Sunday.

Hsinchu Motor Vehicles Office Director Ko Wu said that he and prosecutors are not excluding human fault or mechanical malfunction as the main cause of the accident.

Ko said that the main cause of the deadly tour bus accident has still not been determined and that the investigation report will be completed in two weeks.

Mao said that the MOTC will inspect roads, buses and human factors regarding the tour bus accident in Hsinchu, as well as another accident that occurred recently on the Alishan Highway.

DGH Deputy Director-General Chen Mao-nan said that the DGH will also check on the management of tour buses, drivers and tour bus company nationally.

Chen said that the 193 tour buses that are the same model as the bus involved in the Hsinchu accident would be the first to be inspected before Dec. 20.

The focus of the inspections will be if the breaks of the buses still work when the engines are not in operation.

Before the inspections are completed, Chen said, all the tour buses can still be operated. However, if there are any confirmed mechanical issues from the inspections, the MOTC will recall all buses for repair.

Record of Accidents

Some legislators questioned whether the government took active measures to inspect tour buses as the same model of tour bus was also involved in another accident last year.
