Laptop thief arrested within 30 minutes

SINGAPORE - A laptop thief, who reportedly robbed a victim of the gadget by threatening her with a sharp object, has been arrested.

The arrest was made within 30 minutes of the report.

The suspect, believed to be in his 30s, committed the robbery in the vicinity of Blk 535 Serangoon North Avenue 4 yesterday.

The victim, a 33-year-old female, was on her way home when the suspect confronted her with an unknown sharp object.

He subsequently snatched her bag containing the laptop, worth about $700, and fled towards an unknown direction.

Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division responded to the case promptly and commenced their preliminary interviews with the victim. At the same time, another team of officers started combing the vicinity for the suspect based on the descriptions obtained from the victim.

The officers sighted the suspect who fit the descriptions, walking along the junction of Serangoon Avenue 5 and Avenue 6. When the suspect noticed the officers, he abandoned the stolen bag and fled from the scene. The officers managed to detain the suspect after a short chase.

The victim's stolen bag containing her laptop was also recovered.

The suspect will be charged in Court tomorrow for an offence of Robbery under Section 392 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 14 years and shall be liable for a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

Acting Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division HQ, Superintendent of Police Chua Chuan Seng advised residents to be calm when confronted by such criminals, to note their distinctive features and attire, and to contact the police immediately.
