9 arrested over parang slashing

Nine people have been arrested over Saturday's vicious parang attack on a 20-year-old full-time national serviceman.

Police said the suspects, aged between 20 and 22, were picked up over the past two days.

At least two of them are believed to have been armed during the evening attack outside Cathay Cineleisure Orchard.

On Sunday, it was reported that the suspects fled in separate taxis.

But the victim, Mr Wilson Siau, said he recognised his assailants and was assisting in police investigations, which are ongoing.

The mall has since confirmed that it has closed circuit television cameras on its premises. Mr Siau is recovering in hospital from injuries to his head and hands, and was in stable condition yesterday.

Meanwhile, the area where he was slashed was described as an accident waiting to happen by youth counsellors and tenants.

Cathay Cineleisure Orchard and youth hangout *Scape are well-known gathering spots for large groups of young people, some of whom belong to gangs, they said.

They told The Straits Times the area needs more attention despite frequent police patrols and the presence of security guards.
