16-year-old robbery suspect nabbed

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 16-year-old youth for assaulting and robbing a female victim in the vicinity of Hougang Avenue 1.

At around midnight on June 5, a 39-year-old woman was returning home after work. When she reached the void deck of her flat, an unknown person came from behind and started assaulting her. The person then grabbed the victim's handbag which contained cash, valuables and a handphone before fleeing from the scene. The victim was unable to provide a detailed description of the suspect as she was in shock.

With assistance from CCTV footage nearby, the officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division managed to establish the suspect's identity.

The suspect was subsequently arrested in the vicinity of Owen Road this morning.

Commander (covering) of Ang Mo Kio Police Division HQ, Superintendant of Police Leon Chan advised residents returning home late at nights to be cautious of suspicious persons or to inform their family members to accompany them back home late at night.

The suspect will be charged in Court on Wednesday for an offence of Robbery with Hurt under Section 394 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 20 years and shall be liable with not less than 12 strokes of the cane.
