MALACCA - A 10-year-old girl spent an hour in excruciating pain after her left foot was stuck in the space between the steps and the escalator wall at a shopping mall on Sunday.
Chrisanta Geron Lee was going down to the mall's ground floor with her parents and siblings when the incident happened.
The girls's mother, who only wanted to be known as Juliet, 46, when met at Malacca Hospital here yesterday, said the incident happened very fast.
"When we were going down on the escalator, Chrisanta was standing in front of us and she suddenly started screaming. My husband rushed down to help her while I ran to press the escalator's emergency button. She was dragged for a few seconds before the escalator finally stopped."
Juliet said firemen from the Jalan Kubu Fire and Rescue Department, who arrived few moments later, pried open the escalator's parts, assisted by the mall's maintenance crew.
"It took them about an hour to free my daughter's foot. I could even see her bones. She was taken to the hospital for treatment. Luckily, the doctors said she did not suffer any torn tendons or fractured bones. The only worry now is her skin which was damaged severely."
Juliet said her husband had lodged a police report on the incident, but had yet to decide whether to initiate legal action against the mall's management.
She added that after the incident, the mall's management staff visited them and promised to take responsibility for the incident.
"If they hold on to their promise, we will not initiate legal action against them."
