Constable accidentally shoots himself

KAJANG - A police constable is fighting for his life after accidentally shooting himself at the district police headquarters here yesterday.

Constable Syaiful Nizam Zamaluddin, 24, was about to surrender his duty gun, a revolver .38, after finishing his shift, when the gun accidentally went off in the incident at 7.50pm.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Ab Rashid Ab Wahab said the victim who had been admitted at the Intensive Care unit of the Kajang Hospital, is comatose.

"The victim was with eight other policemen during the incident. He was unloading the bullets from his gun, when the firearm suddenly went off.

"The bullet penetrated his head from the right side and exited from the left," he said.

Ab Rashid said investigations is being carried out to determine how the incident happened, and the victim's colleagues had their statements recorded.

It was learnt that the victim is a newly-wed, and his wife is seven months pregnant.

Syaiful Nizam from Kampung Air Panas, Kuala Lumpur joined the force on December 1, 2009, and is currently attached with the police headquarters' as general duty officer.
