Fire Dept to inspect malls in Johor

JOHOR BARU - The Johor Fire and Rescue Department will conduct checks at various shopping malls to ensure safety procedures are met for Christmas decorations.

"The department's enforcement unit will conduct inspections to make sure that these decorations will not become hazardous," said department director Abdul Ghani Daud yesterday.

He said the two most common violations were blocking emergency stairs and covering fire extinguishers with decorations.

Abdul Ghani said the enforcement unit would also check whether the fire alarm system at each shopping mall was working.

"If the shopping mall management failed to follow procedures we will issue notices. If they don't institute the necessary changes, we will then issue compounds.

We usually conduct these routine checks two weeks before a festive season begins," he said.
