16-year-old loanshark runner arrested

SINGAPORE - A 16-year-old teenager was arrested in Yishun yesterday afternoon for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

The suspect is believed to have assisted unlicensed moneylenders by harassing debtors, and allegedly recruited others to do likewise in the Bedok and Hougang estates, police said of their preliminary findings.

Investigations against the suspect are ongoing.

First-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassments face imprisonment of a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and up to $50,000, and caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.
