SPH donates more than $3 million this year

Singpore Press Holdings (SPH) has donated more than $3 million towards various social and charitable causes this year.

This includes an annual donation of $400,000 by SPH and SPH Foundation to the Community Chest of Singapore in August.

Besides outright cash donation, SPH management and staff also adopted and fulfilled about 300 wishes for the Boys' Brigade Share-a-Gift programme, and donated non-perishable food items as well. The total value of contributions was about $18,000.

A Christmas party for more than 100 beneficiaries and their caregivers from Kampong Kapor Family Service Centre and the Singapore Children's Society was held at the SPH News Centre on Thursday morning.

Other SPH charitable events included the SPH Flea Market in aid of The Salvation Army, and the SPH Red Apple Day, a biannual blood donation drive with the Singapore Red Cross.

Various SPH products also helped to raise funds for different causes: The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, where some 11,000 primary and secondary school students from low-income families received more financial help; The New Paper is partnering the Lions Befrienders Service Association and Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Project Helping Hands to raise funds for 1,000 elderly who are living alone; and The Chinese Newspapers Division gave out $50,000 worth of book vouchers sponsored by Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple to needy students at the Singapore Book Fair 2011.

In addition, The ChildAid concert organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times will be running from Dec 8 to Dec 10 at the University Cultural Centre, National University of Singapore.

Into its seventh year, this year's ChildAid concert aims to raise at least $1.7 million for The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund.

SPH's corporate social responsibility programme includes giving to the charity, social organisations, arts, education, wildlife conservation and sports, among others.

For its corporate social responsibility efforts, the company was honoured with the President's Social Service Award in August.
