COTABATO CITY, Philippines - Army soldiers and agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao on Wednesday arrested an American and his wife for possessing prohibited drugs and firearms, the military said.

Colonel Ernesto Aradanas, chief of the military's 603rd Infantry Brigade, said Army and PDEA-ARMM agents raided a house in SPDA subdivision in Barangay Semba, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao at 11:30 a.m. and arrested American Jeffrey Bennitt, 44, and his Filipina wife Sarah Cabugatan.

Aradanas said the raiding team, armed with arrest warrants, also seized 10 kilos of methamphetamine hydrochloride (locally known as shabu), shabu paraphernalia from the suspects and assorted unlicensed high-powered firearms.

The seized firearms included a 12-gauge shotgun, a 9mm pistol and a .45-cal. pistol.

Aradanas said the suspects have been undergoing tactical interrogation at the PDEA-ARMM office.

SPDA is a subdivision a kilometer away from the Army's 6th Infantry Division headquarters in Maguindanao.
