Los Angeles - Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell is to play intrepid boy reporter Tintin in the Steven Spielberg-directed movie adaptation of the comic-strip hero.

And alongside him will be James Bond actor Daniel Craig, this time playing the role of a villain, the pirate Red Rackham, entertainment industry reports said this week.

Principal photography on the movie - titled The Adventures Of Tintin: Secret Of The Unicorn - reportedly got underway on Monday.

The film, which will use computergenerated techniques, is tentatively scheduled for a release date in 2011.

British actor Bell is best known for his title role in the 2000 hit film Billy Elliot, playing a ballet prodigy.

Both Bell and Craig recently co-starred in the World War II drama, Defiance.

The Tintin film is set to be the first in a series of two or three films based on the Belgian comic character, according to reports. The reporter's first adventure, created by George Remi who was better known by his pen name Herge, appeared 80 years ago in 1929.

The first film is being produced by Spielberg, movie industry executive Kathleen Kennedy and Oscar-winning Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson.

Jackson is set to direct the second film in the series.

Both Spielberg and Jackson have previously indicated that the Tintin adaptations would feature groundbreaking computer animation technology.

'Herge's characters have been reborn as living beings, expressing emotion and a soul which goes far beyond anything we've seen to date with computer animated characters,' Spielberg said in a 2007 interview.

Jackson said the characters would not look cartoonish. 'We're making them look photorealistic. The fibres of their clothing, the pores of their skin and each individual hair, they look exactly like real people - but real Herge people!'
