Movie review: The Woman Knight of Mirror Lake

The Woman Knight of Mirror Lake (PG13)
Historical drama/Action/115 minutes

You can tell that director Herman Yau is a great admirer of Qiu Jin, the prominent Chinese female revolutionary during the Qing dynasty who is the subject of his movie. Throughout the film, he takes great pains to showcase how striking and edgy she had been for her time, meticulously adding anecdotes to prove his point.

What Yau lacks is consistency. Whenever the movie gets a little serious, he suddenly switches gears and throws in some gongfu action, partly turning a straightforward historical biopic into a crazy martial-arts flick.
