Hong Kong trumps Singapore

IT'S turning out to be a fantastic week for Hong Kong TVB actor Kevin Cheng.

After winning Best Actor at the TVB 44th Anniversary Awards on Monday for his role in Ghetto Justice, the 42-year-old again picked up Best Actor in a Leading Role for the same drama at the 16th Asian Television (ATV)Awards in Singapore last night.

Of the seven nominees for the award, five were Singaporean actors.

When Cheng went on stage to receive his trophy at the Shangri-La Hotel, he thanked the ATV voting committee, TVB and his fans in Singapore, Hong Kong and China.

He told The New Paper: "I'm very happy...I was really hoping to win.

"When I won (Best Actor for the same drama) in award ceremonies in Hong Kong and Malaysia, my competitors were all TVB actors.

"But the award tonight is extra meaningful because the other nominees are from Asia."

But his win wasn't a surprise.

Even before the awards ceremony began, the Hong Kong press were reporting that Cheng would win the Best Actor award.

It is not clear if the news was leaked, a lucky guess, or confidence on the Hong Kong media's part.
