Give more support to Ilo Ilo

SINGAPORE - I read the commentary, Big Winner Unlikely To Score At Home (SundayLife!, June 2), about the Cannes Film Festival award-winning film Ilo Ilo.

My feeling is that the headline and analysis were premature in predicting the film's doom.

Although I would not disagree with the comments, the challenge is changing the perception of local and Asian films in the eyes of viewers.

The media has a huge part to play in this. Local films are basically handicapped from birth. They are in the unenviable position of having to compete with Hollywood blockbusters, contend with a tough audience and face limited distribution options.

Creative Singaporeans will never find a place in their homeland until the media gives them a little more support.

A headline can indeed make or break a film.

No one is asking The Straits Times to be a mindless cheerleader or a public relations agency, but the paper might question if it could do a bit more.
