4.9kg of heroin seized at Woodlands Checkpoint

SINGAPORE - Authorities have made their first big drug haul of 2012, seizing approximately 4.9kg of heroin worth about $740,000 at the Woodlands checkpoint yesterday evening.

A 34-year-old Malaysian suspect has been detained; he had attempted to hide the heroin - packaged in black bundles - in the seats of the bus he was travelling in.

His suspicious behaviour was spotted by two other passengers, who informed the bus driver.

Upon reaching the Woodlands Checkpoint, the 31-year-old driver conducted a search of his bus and found three black bundles hidden in one of the seats.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) was alerted, and officers swiftly detained the suspect.

In a further sweep of the bus, officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) recovered another seven black bundles hidden in another seat.

The bundles are believed to contain heroin and in total, 17 packets concealed in 10 bundles of the drug were found.

A K9 dog unit from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) was also activated to assist in the operation.
