Yaw's personal life under scrutiny as ex-wife opens up

SINGAPORE - In the latest turn of events surrounding the surprise resignation of Worker's Party (WP) member Mr Yaw Shin Leong from his party's leadership, his former wife has stepped forward to state that it was not adultery on his part that ended their marriage.

Public scrutiny on Mr Yaw's love life has been intense ever since rumours surfaced three weeks ago that the Hougang Member of Parliament (MP) had an affair with a married female WP member.

Mr Yaw's first marriage in 2004 to 35-year-old Ms Ng Mei Sze, a teacher and a head of department at a top school, lasted for only about a year, The Straits Times (ST) reported.

ST said the couple did not live together during their brief married life, and have not spoken to each other ever since their relationship fell apart.

She did not specify what caused the breakdown.

In 2006, Mr Yaw reportedly became attached to his current wife, Madam Lau Wang Lin, and married her in November 2008.

ST sources said she had been a counting and polling agent for the Ang Mo Kio GRC team during the 2006 election.

While the couple has been described as very loving, there is now a fresh claim that Mr Yaw may have committed another indiscretion.

Following up on an email tipoff, The New Paper (TNP) reported that they interviewed a Chinese woman who claimed she had a "very short" affair with Mr Yaw.

The woman, who was not named, initially said their relationship was a professional one where she provided him translation services. She has been working with Mr Yaw for about two years.

She later admitted to the affair, but said it was so short that she didn't want to mention it.

It has also surfaced that Mr Yaw had been engaged to a fellow student during his university days, but they later broke up.

WP has kept mum despite all the rumours flying about online about Mr Yaw's private life.

Both WP and Mr Yaw have yet to state the reason behind the resignation, despite repeated queries from both ST and TNP.

WP would only say that they do not comment on rumours.
