Movie Review: Wolf Children

Wolf Children (PG13)- Animation/117 minutes

Mamoru Hosoda, director of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) and Summer Wars (2009), shows that he has a distinctive vision of his own with this release.

When Hana (voiced by Miyazaki Aoi) falls in love with a mysterious man, she finds out that he is a werewolf. They have two children: a daughter and a son called Yuki and Ame. Hana decides to move to a rural area to protect the two children as their wolf natures gradually emerge.

There is a magnificent understated eye for detail, from the grain of wood on doors to the lovingly captured forest scenes, that help lift the movie above regular animation fare.
