ASEAN Para Games: Sponsorship target passed

ASEAN Para Games: Sponsorship target passed

Organisers had targeted a total sponsorship sum of $5 million for the first ASEAN Para Games to be held in Singapore.

Yesterday, the figure stood at $6.5 million, after Cycle & Carriage signed a tier-one sponsorship agreement to the tune of $600,000.

Cycle & Carriage will provide 78 vehicles for the transportation of officials and dignitaries during the 8th ASEAN Para Games, which will be held here from Dec 3 to Dec 9.

Two 15-seater Maxus vehicles and one 12-seater vehicle, both slated to be launched next month, will make its first appearance on Singapore roads for the Games.

One 15-seater unit will be converted into a wheelchair-friendly vehicle, which can accommodate three wheelchair passengers and nine seated passengers.

"Maxus actually is a newly acquired brand that will be introduced. And the Para Games, we feel being the first such major Games in Singapore, would be a very good platform for us to contribute and at the same time also expose the latest range of vehicles that we have," said Eric Chan, managing director of Singapore Motor Operations, Cycle & Carriage.

The automotive company will extend its sponsorship by providing the wheelchair-friendly Maxus vehicle to the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) for two years after the Games.

While the agreement will help the mobility of officials and dignitaries during the Games, transportation plans will remain the same for athletes.

The MRT will be the first option for athletes to travel to their competition venues, which are mostly situated at the Singapore Sports Hub.

Around 3,000 athletes and officials will stay at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, where the Bayfront MRT station is located, and the Stadium station at the Sports Hub is three stops away.

Eight of the Games' 15 sports will be contested at the Sports Hub and athletes will also have the option of using shuttle buses to any venue.

Chairman of the Singapore ASEAN Para Games Organising Committee, Lim Teck Yin, expressed confidence in the efficiency of the transportation plan for the athletes.

"We will find the most expedient solution based on what is available, to make sure athletes arrive in good form to compete," he said.

Team Singapore chef de mission Raja Singh is excited as the event draws ever closer.

"I think this is the most well-organised Games I've seen so far in Singapore," Singh said.

"We have tremendous support from Sport Singapore, and we are coming together as one Team Singapore."
