$2 million archaeological park opens in Brunei

The $2 million Kota Batu Archaeological Park will officially be opened today.

The park, consisting of Kota Batu Complex I, an information centre and walkways, according to Director of Museums Pg Dr Karim Pg Hj Osman, is the department's latest exhibition layout to showcase the ancient objects found in Mukim Kota Batu.

The director said that the new archaeological park will help the public to learn the history of the sultanate through various objects featured.

He explained that the park showcases ancient objects found at Kota Batu Archaeological site around 1950 dating over 700-years-old.

He added that the 120-acre park will also include a 2.9km walkway for sightseeing.

The exhibition displays various ancient and traditional objects used in those times such as traditional stone carvings, potteries, ceramics and ancient coins.

Pg Dr Karim said that the park will be open daily from 9am to 5pm.

The opening of the park, said the director, is a positive step in educating the public and the youth.

"We (department of museums) want to ensure that the youth will carry on the local heritage and instil the love of Brunei's history and heritage."

He encouraged the youth to visit the information centre as it will further educate them about their country.

"They are the future, they need to learn their history and instil the love of our local heritage by being interested and involved in the exhibition because it is part of their national identity," he said.

"The only way for our future generation to develop our country is they need to learn and understand Brunei's history, which is why this exhibition is the best opportunity for them to understand, observe and experience our history," he added.

Pg Dr Karim explained that the new information centre is unique as it focuses on ancient artefacts found at Mukim Kota Batu and mostly in their original environment, while the Brunei Museum showcases mixed artifacts found at various sites in Brunei.

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah is scheduled to officially launch the park today.
