A five-year-old boy was seriously injured and had to undergo surgery after he jumped up and down a moving escalator at a mall in North Jakarta.

According to a report on Indoboom which also mentioned that the boy's body was crushed, the incident took place on Dec 27 at around 9pm, in the Pluit Village Mall, Penjaringan.

Lim Yuan Hong was playing on the escalator when he suddenly fell and had his body pinned inside the structure.

The case is still under investigation and police have questioned a number of witnesses at the scene, including mall management.

"Currently, the accident seems to have been caused by the escalator collapsing," said Penjaringan Police Chief Sujudi Ario Seto.

Netizens have been quick to share their sentiments on the incident, with many chiding the boy's parents for not supervising their kid well.

This is not the first time a freak accident involving escalators and lifts have been reported. Four separate incidents of such cases in China were reported in just May last year alone.

The first incident involved a woman in Hubei who was crushed to death when the step of the escalator she was on gave way, plunging her into the machinery.

Another widely discussed case saw a nurse in Shenzhen getting decapitated and 'sliced in half' after the lift she was in malfunctioned.

Not long after, footage of another lift mishap surfaced online. This time, a woman pushing a pram barely escaped being killed in the same fashion.

Days later, it was reported that a waiter in Suzhou had his head crushed by a service lift after he got stuck in a gap.
