51 unaccounted for in Hiroshima landslides

HIROSHIMA - A total of 51 people are unaccounted for after Wednesday's deadly landslides in the city of Hiroshima, local police announced Thursday night.

Hiroshima prefectural police had announced seven people were missing as of Thursday afternoon. However, the police learned there was no contact with 51 when it checked their record of missing people with that of Hiroshima city government.

The mudslides killed at least 39 people. About 2,650 rescue workers, including Self-Defense Forces personnel and police officers, struggled to rescue residents.
