Chinese couple caught stealing toilet lid from Japan hotel

Two tourists have apologised for taking a toilet seat from a hotel in Japan, according to Chinese news website Yong Pai.

The couple, who are from eastern China, took the seat from underneath their hotel bed in Nagoya on Monday (Oct 17).

The hotel found out about the missing seat after the couple's tour group had left, and contacted the travel agency to demand that they return it.

The toilet seat was sent back to the hotel after the group arrived at Mount Fuji, said the group's tour guide.

The couple published an apology online. They said they took the seat because they thought it was left behind by other hotel guests who had stayed in the same room.

"I offer my sincere apology and regrets," said the statement. "I hope the hotel and the local travel agency can treat this with leniency. I promise this improper behaviour won't happen again."

The Ningbo Tourism Bureau confirmed the couple had travelled from the city in Zhejiang province to Japan this week, reported the South China Morning Post.
