Elephant crushes villager

PHETCHABURI PROVINCE, Thailand - An elephant has stomped a man to death in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Kaeng Krachan National Park. Ban Chalermpol village headman Watchara Kamporn said the victim, Detchai Chuanpadung, 50, was gathering wild vegetables in the forest in tambon Huai Sat Yai, Hua Hin district, when he was killed on Friday night.

Detchai's neighbours went looking for him and found his body at about 10pm, so they alerted Watchara.

A 20-strong team of volunteers went to retrieve the body but encountered an elephant herd near the it, Watchara said.

He said they drove the animals off by lighting firecrackers and retrieved the body at about 2am.
