Japan-Vietnam grad school to open in Hanoi next year

TOKYO - The Japanese and Vietnamese governments are teaming up to open a graduate school in Hanoi around September 2016. They intend to establish a full-fledged university in 2019 or 2020.

The plan, part of a Vietnam-Japan University Project launched in 2006, was drawn up with a pair of goals in mind: fostering young people who can contribute to Vietnam's economic growth, and meeting the human resources needs of Japanese companies operating in the Southeast Asian country.

Hiroshige Seko, Japan's deputy chief cabinet secretary, visited Vietnam in mid-April and met with President Truong Tan Sang. They agreed on a schedule for setting up the institutions.

The graduate school will be founded on the campus of Vietnam National University, Hanoi. It will offer master's programs in the humanities and social sciences.

As for the new university, construction started in December in the Hoa Lac area of the Vietnamese capital. The college will be run as an affiliate of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and have an array of departments: economics and management; law; Japan studies; science and technology; and medicine and nursing care. Classes will be taught in English, Japanese or Vietnamese.
