Jokowi to issue regulation on illegal fishing

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's non-intervention approach to the worsening standoff between the National Police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has won support from politicians but criticism from experts who condemn his indecisiveness as divisive for the country.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is expected to soon issue a presidential instruction (Inpres) that would be used as a legal foundation to crackdown on illegal fishing in Indonesian waters.

Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said the new regulation would help tackle unregulated fishing activities.

"The President will soon issue the Inpres on the management of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities" Susi said in a press briefing on Wednesday.

Susi said she had urged the President to issue the Inpres, as facilitate her efforts to safeguard the country's territorial waters.

She said that with the Inpres, the fight against illegal fishing could have a firm legal foundation that would guarantee its continuity.

Susi said the planned regulation could have impacts on prices and supply of fish at various markets in Indonesia.
