Lawyer and 'accomplice' arrested for allegedly swindling disabled teen of $162K

Police have arrested former lawyer Pisit Sammalert and a woman in Bangkok over their alleged roles in cheating a 14-year-old road accident victim out of Bt4 million (S$162,340) in compensation.

Pisit and Thitapa, or Pattharawadee Sawasdee, were nabbed on Sunday night at the parking lot of condominium in Soi Ram-Indra 125 in Bangkok's Min Buri district.

The Taling Chan provincial court had earlier issued arrest warrants for the duo, along with another alleged female accomplice, Pornpaveen Chukaew.

Pasit and Pornpaveen are accused of using a forged document to cheat Pasit's pro-bono client Porntip Chantharat, 44, and her wheelchair-bound 14-year-old daughter, Pattarada "Beam" Kaewpong, out of Bt4 million in compensation following a 2005 road accident.

Thitapa was accused of aiding and abetting the wrongdoing.

When reports of the alleged swindle surfaced, the Lawyers Council of Thailand stripped Pisit from its list of qualified practitioner on ground that he was declared insolvent.
