Malaysian arrested in Batam for meth smuggling

A Malaysian man, identified as Madhan Raj Raja, has been arrested for attempting to smuggle 1 kilogram of crystal methamphetamine, known locally as shabu-shabu, through Batam International Port in Riau Islands province.

"The suspect arrived at the port at around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday aboard the Dumai Ekspress 2 ferry from Setulang Laut, Malaysia," Batam Management Agency's (BP) director of integrated services and public relations, Dwi Djoko Wiwoho, said in Jakarta on Sunday.

He said the port authority's suspicions were raised when the suspect grew uneasy as he approached one of the port's X-ray machines.

Upon inspection, he was found to have concealed the drugs in his underwear. "The drugs he was carrying weighed around 1 kilogram and have a street value of more than Rp 1.5 billion, [S$16000]" he said as reported by Antara news agency on Sunday.
