Man stabs 2 people to death during ATM robbery in China

SHANTOU - Two men were stabbed to death during a brazen robbery staged by a knife-wielding attacker in an automated teller machine (ATM) room last Saturday (April 8).

Footage of the attack in southern China's Guangdong province, captured on a surveillance camera, was circulated widely online and triggered shocked reactions for its brutality.

Local media reported that the suspect, who appeared medium-built and was carrying the weapon wrapped in newspaper, was arrested on Sunday.

The suspect was seen standing next to two men - one at the machine and the other queuing behind - in the room and at one point even looked up at the camera.

He then slowly unwrapped the knife before launching his attack on the waiting man, plunging the knife into his neck before stabbing him repeatedly as he attempted to escape.

The suspect then waved his knife at the other man, who ran out the door, and grabbed some cash before escaping.

According to the Guangzhou Daily, police at the scene found two bodies lying in pools of blood on the street. Both had knife wounds, although footage did not show the suspect stabbing a second man.

A large manhunt ensued, and the suspect was arrested on Sunday.

Netizens were shocked that the attack could have taken place at an ATM station located along a busy street where there were many pedestrians and vehicles.
