A man on the Shanghai Metro in China was chided by surrounding passengers for repeatedly spitting on the floor, and he retaliated with a profanity-laced tirade, which in turn triggered angry reactions from the passengers.

While the footage did not capture the man's spitting, it showed the tense atmosphere in the train carriage as a woman confronted the young man, saying: "So you're in the wrong and you still want to curse?"

The young man continued his verbal salvo against the woman, oblivious to the young child and an elderly gentleman sitting next to him, Shanghaiist reported.

Unable to tolerate the young man's rude attitude, the elderly gentleman stands up to berate him, triggering a defiance from the young man.

At this juncture, a man barges forward and delivers a kick to the young man. Chaos ensues.

As matters escalated, some passengers in the crowd intervened and managed to disrupt the mob from pursuing the alleged spitter down the train.
