JAPAN - Japan's iconic volcano has not erupted for more than 300 years
A council researching measures to deal with an eruption of Mt. Fuji completed a large-scale evacuation plan for neighbouring Shizuoka, Yamanashi, Kanagawa prefectures Thursday.
According to the plan, up to 470,000 residents will be forced to flee if volcanic ash accumulation reaches more than 30 centimetres.
The council consists of officials and experts from the three prefectural governments, the national government and others.
Mt. Fuji is designated as an active volcano though the mountain does not have its eruption record for more than 300 years.
