SIBU - Police have classified as murder after a man accused of outraging the modesty of a five-year-old girl died at Sibu Hospital here.
District police chief, ACP Mohd Kamal Kordi, said a post mortem showed that the man, 44, died of injuries to his heart caused by a blunt object.
"We will investigate how the detainee was inflicted by the object as he was earlier sent from Sentosa Hospital in Kuching to the police lock-up here and subsequently to the Sibu prison," ACP Mohd Kamal said.
The man was charged at a Magistrate's court here in May for outraging the modesty of the girl at the back of a shophouse in Sibu Jaya at about 8.15pm on May 17.
He had tried to rape the girl but was caught by members of the public. The court ordered the man to undergo psychiatric observation at Sentosa Hospital.
At 9pm on Sunday, he was sent to the hospital due to the injuries and died at 8pm the next day.
ACP Kamal said the police would get clarification from all those involved in handling the detainee, including staff at the police lock-up, Sentosa Hospital and the prison department.
He said samples of the man's internal organ were sent to Kuala Lumpur for analysis.
The family of the man claimed the remains on Thursday.
