Patient holds nurse hostage at knifepoint, people just snap photos

A patient randomly decided to hold a nurse hostage at knifepoint at a hospital in Nanjing, China last week.

The patient, a man in his forties, suddenly grabbed a nurse who was nearby and held a fruit knife to her throat.

Onlookers responded with utmost empathy, snapping as many pictures and providing as little assistance as possible.

SCMP reported that an eyewitness confirmed the attacker was troubled indeed: "He kept yelling 'I don't want to live anymore, someone is plotting against me!"

Shanghaiist reported a witness saying the guy was unsure about the whole thing.

Here is his account: "He put the back of the knife blade against the nurse's neck. Before he seized the nurse, he called the police himself. The police came and left, maybe because they thought nothing was wrong. After he grabbed the nurse, he kept asking us to call the police and tell the police to come as soon as possible."

But another witness reported that the guy seemed to be of two minds about the whole thing and gave his account: "He put the back of the knife blade against the nurse's neck. Before he seized the nurse, he called the police himself."

We're happy to report that this story has a happier ending compared to the last hospital hostage situation in China. The nurse in the recent incident was rescued after half an hour, unharmed, and with lots of photos to remember the incident by.
