People with just one Thai parent can now join military

Thai soldiers patrol at Ratchaprasong intersection in Bangkok on June 1, 2014.

Before this amendment, it was mandatory for anyone wanting to join the Thai armed forces to have two Thai parents.

Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Kongcheep Tantrawanich yesterday announced that the Defence Council had approved the amendment to boost people's opportunities to enter military service.

Police officers, public prosecutors and judges already only need to have one Thai parent to qualify for the job.

However, Kongcheep said the nationality rule could be stricter for officials tasked with key missions such as commanding a military aircraft.
