Prominent lawyer hired by Engeline's adoptive mother

The adoptive mother of murdered child Engeline Margret Megawe, Margriet Christina Megawe, has appointed prominent lawyer Hotma Sitompul from Jakarta to defend her.

"[Margriet] keeps crying. She adopted this girl out of affection. She took Engeline after an employee told her that there was a couple that could not take their baby from hospital," Hotma told reporters after visiting Margriet in police custody on Wednesday. Police earlier named Margriet a suspect and detained her for neglecting Engeline.

Bali Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Hery Wiyanto confirmed that Margriet had officially appointed Hotma as her new lawyer. "She is no longer using the lawyer provided by the police," Hery said.

He added that the police would use a lie detector, borrowed from the National Police Headquarters, when interrogating Margriet on Thursday.
