Taiwan clinic could have exposed over 1,000 people to hepatitis C

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Fury and fear are sweeping Taoyuan after it was revealed that a clinic's head nurse had been reusing needles, putting over a thousand people at risk of hepatitis C.

The nurse at the Yangmei District clinic, which has already been shut down, claimed she didn't know needle sharing could transmit the disease.

Five patients have already been diagnosed with acute hepatitis C.

Another 1,200 could have been infected.

The incurable disease destroys the liver and leads to liver cancer.

The incident marks the first time that a medical institution in Taiwan has seen a cluster of hepatitis C infections.
