US military helicopter makes crash landing on Japan's Okinawa

TOKYO - A US helicopter made a crash landing in Japan's southern island chain of Okinawa on Monday, police said, with no immediate reports of casualties or injuries.

"We have only confirmed that a US helicopter made a crash landing," a local police officer told AFP.

"The first call was made by a local resident, reporting that smoke was rising either from Camp Schwab or Camp Hansen shortly after 4:00 pm."

The two bases are located on Okinawa, which is home to tens of thousands of US military personnel.

Footage by public broadcaster NHK showed what appeared to be burning wreckage in a forested area.

Jiji Press news agency there no injuries among people on the ground.

The incident may spark renewed concern among residents of Okinawa, who are uncomfortable with the vast US military presence.
