Asics City Relay a race with a twist

Asics City Relay a race with a twist

With at least 50 running events ranging from the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS) to unique variations like The Color Run, some would think there is more than enough running events on the annual calendar.

But running enthusiasts who can't get enough of a fix will be happy to hear that there will be a new event in August, which will come with an exciting twist at that.

The inaugural Asics City Relay, to be held at the Singapore Sports Hub on Aug 1, will offer something different for both competitive and non-competitive runners.

While there are already runs that feature a relay format - like the SCMS's Ekiden race - the Asics relay will be the first marathon-only relay event and, more excitingly, it will be held at night.

Speaking at the launch at the Singapore Sports Hub yesterday, Chris Robb, chief executive of organisers Spectrum Worldwide, said: "We see the Asics City Relay as having massive potential here in Singapore.

"With the exciting new Sports Hub venue, we're set for a truly exciting night race which is quite different from any other existing event on the local race calendar.

"This event is also much more than just a marathon. The Asics City Relay is designed as a social event with a real emphasis on the entertainment, corporate hospitality and food and beverage options on the night."

The race will require participants to compete in teams of four, and each runner will run one lap of the course around the Sports Hub precinct, which is approximately 10.5km.
