Singapore have moved into contention for a medal at the World Tenpin Bowling Association world championships in Nevada.

The trio of Shayna Ng, Bernice Lim and Jazreel Tan are third in a field of 68 in the women's trios after the first squad - on short oil - on Sunday morning (Singapore time).

The Singaporeans chalked up a combined total of 1,862 pinfalls over three games, behind leaders South Korea (2,010) and Taiwan (1,897) in second place.

The Republic's other trio - Cherie Tan, New Hui Fen, Daphne Tan - are in 10th place with 1,784 pinfalls. Lim (right), 21, was the best-performing Singaporean in the event, hitting 247 twice in three games and a total of 717.

Malaysia's Sin Li Jane had the day's highest single-game score of 278.

The second squad - in medium oil - was in progress at press time yesterday, with the top four threesomes heading into the semifinals. The final was scheduled for this morning.

The Singapore men's team, with an average age of 19.5 years - could only muster a best result of 35th in the trios, finishing 10th-best in Asia.

Ng Tiac Pin, Ng Chiew Pang and Keith Saw managed a 3,632-pinfall total over six games, 469 pins behind the top-ranked team from the United States, which comprised Bill O'Neill, Tommy Jones and Chris Barnes.

Singapore's other team in the event - Jaris Goh, Joel Tan and Javier Tan - finished 68th in the 72-strong field with 3,263 pinfalls.

Canada's Mark Buffa, Francois Lavoie and Patrick Girard went on to win the event, beating South Korea's Choi Bok Eum, Cho Young Seon and Kim Jun Yung 721-602 in the final.

Choi was part of the Korean team that clinched gold in the event at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou. Earlier in the competition - it ends on Saturday with the team finals - Lim finished ninth in the women's singles.

She then partnered Tan to a ninth-place finish in the women's doubles.

The much-vaunted women's team - which clinched a silver at the 2011 World Women's Championships in Hong Kong - will begin preliminary round action on Wednesday.
